[Online] NFX CFD_Porous Media Flow Analysis

Overview

This video introduces porous media modeling in CFD to predict pressure loss and flow resistance in materials with fine, interconnected pore structures without modeling their detailed internal geometry.

Porous Media Analysis Workflow :

• Porous Media Properties
A separate porous media property is defined for the porous region, distinct from the normal flow region. Resistance coefficients based on permeability are entered to represent viscous resistance at low velocity and additional inertial resistance as velocity increases.

• Resistance Coefficient Setup
The porous media model uses viscous and inertial resistance terms to approximate pressure-loss behavior. This approach avoids the extensive mesh and computational requirements associated with resolving individual microscopic pores.

• Flow & Pressure Analysis
The results show incoming air decelerating sharply as it passes through the porous region, with pressure rising just upstream. These flow and pressure distributions illustrate the resistance characteristics represented by the porous media model.

The video demonstrates how porous media modeling can capture the flow resistance of components such as filters, sound absorbers, catalysts, and tube banks without explicitly modeling their detailed internal geometry.
